As one of the world’s leading summer academies, European Music Institute Vienna, founded in 1975 as the Vienna Masterclasses by Günther Theuring under the artistic direction of Jörg Birhance, we want to continue this feat together with our students, young musicians from all over the world the world: Through the study and practice of the masterpieces of the classical era, we believe we provide a key to understanding all musical styles and eras of the international concert repertoire through to contemporary music.
The era of Viennese Classicism, the time in which music as an art found its “highest clarity of inner and outer appearance” (Hans Swarowsky), is therefore a key to our musical education. It can give those who strive for a complete understanding of all the parameters of a piece of music – provided they have learned to combine theory and practice – the ability to master any style of art music.
